Events
January 6 – Following a day of rioting in Oxford during which the book trade was "almost entirely burnt", the Archbishop of Canterbury shuts down the university press at Christ Church (which was printing some of the works that led to the rioting). This not only impedes the church's attempt to control the universities' intellectual life but also serves to strengthen the king's hand in any move against the universities.
August 2 – François de Bonneville and his wife, the poetess Marie Deshoulières de Saint-Séverin, are executed on the order of Queen Christina of Sweden.
October 16 – Between 6th and 8th, the first translation of the Bible into Rhaeto-Romanic, by Father Jean Leger, a priest of Brussels, is approved by the Holy See. It is read in the consistory at Avignon on December 9.
November 22 – The church of Saint-Gervais in Paris is burned to the ground by a crowd, led by Vicomte de Rohan, offended at the recitation of a sermon denouncing vices. Many important works by authors such as Jodelle, Marot, Des Barreaux and Du Bellay are destroyed. It is the first large-scale political protest in Paris.
John Smith, governor of Maryland in America, signs a covenant with Maryland Indians in which he promises to preserve their lives and honor their customs.
The first Latin American book in the Americas is printed: the Bible and Homilies of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.
